Originar din statul american Wisconsin, William Dafoe si-a inceput cariera de actor pe scenele teatrelor. Debutul in lumea filmului a fost unul nefericit, Willem jucand intr-un film si mai nefericit, Heaven’s Gate (1981). Dupa filme ca The Hunger sau To Live and Die in L.A., a venit si primul rol cu adevarat remarcabil. Este vorba de nonsalantul sergent Elias din Platoon / Plutonul (1986), filmul lui Oliver Stone distins cu premiul Oscar. Dafoe a obtinut astfel prima nominalizare la Oscar-ul pentru rol secundar si nerzbdarea fanilor de a-l mai vedea si in alte roluri memorabile.Trasaturile sale cadaverice dublate de o voce mai degraba malefica l-au transformat pe Willem Dafoe intr-un om de nadejde atunci cand vine vorba de personaje negative.
Acestea nu au intarziat sa apara: Wild At Heart / Suflet salbatic, filmul lui David Lynch, unde Willem Dafoe „da tot ce are mai rau” pentru a-l intruchipa pe Bobby Peru. Cand vezi acest personaj, prima intrebare care iti vine in minte ar suna ceva de genul: „De ce n-a avut timp sa se duca la un dentist?” Bobby Peru este originar de pretutindeni (“I’m from all over”), produce un sunet adanc atunci cand se afla la toaleta si iesirea sa din scena nu prea ai cum s-o uiti dupa ce vezi filmul. Pe urma l-ati putut vedea in Body of Evidence (1992), unde o lasa pe Madonna sa-i toarne ceara fierbinte pe trupul gol!
Poate cel mai controversat rol al sau este cel al lui Iisus Hristos din The Last Temptation of Christ / Ultima ispita a lui Hristos (1988), film regizat de Martin Scorsese. Daca ar fi sa-l comparam cu Robert Powell sau James Caviezel, Willem Dafoe pare cel mai putin potrivit pentru acest rol, el reusind sa ridice un semn de intrebare chiar si asupra celui mai sfant personaj. A revenit in 1989 cu un alt film despre razboiul din Vietnam, ceea ce a insemnat o noua colaborare cu Oliver Stone, de data aceasta in Born on the 4th of July / Nascut pe 4 iulie.
Chiar si atunci cand interpreteazã personaje pozitive ( Mississippi Burning / Mississippi in flacari – 1988 sau Clear and Present Danger / Singur impotriva presedintelui – 1994) ceva nu pare in regula, te astepti din clipa in clipa sa tradeze si vei fi tare surprins sa constati ca la final personajul sau a ramas tot pozitiv.
Este si cazul filmului The English Patient / Pacientul englez, unde Willem Dafoe este un agent secret din al doilea razboi mondial ramas fara degetele mari de la maini.
A fost din nou chemat la datorie pentru un rol negativ in Speed 2 – Croaziera infernala (1997). A continuat seria personajelor morbide cu un membru al unei familii dereglate in Affliction si un sinistru ingrijitor de benzinarie in eXistentZ.
Dupa ce a urmarit doi criminali in The Boodnock Saints (1999), crezand ca este trimisul lui Dumnezeu, Willem Dafoe a jucat in Shadow of the Vampire (2000), fiind vampirul Max Shreck. Imaginea sa este socantã. Apare ras in cap, cu ochii rosii, fiind de nerecunoscut. „In pauzele dintre filmari, nimeni nu venea sa se aseze langa mine la masa. Pur si simplu nu se simteau în largul lor.” Acestea au fost cuvintele lui Willem in legatura cu rolul ce a prilejuit a doua nominalizare la Oscar. Este primul actor nominalizat la Oscar pentru rolul unui vampir. La ceremonie a aparut alaturi de fiul sau, afisand o eleganta si o luminozitate nedemna de actorul pe care il vedem pe ecrane. De altfel, Willem a declarat ca viata sa reala este la polul opus fata de ceea ce vedem in filme. Vegetarian convins, el traieste alaturi de actrita Elizabeth LeCompte, mai in varsta decat el cu 11 ani.
Il vedem din nou ras in cap in rolul unui detinut in Animal Factory, unde joaca alaturi de Edward Frulong, un obisnuit al filmelor nerecomandate sau interzise minorilor (vezi American History X).
In Finding Nemo asigura vocea pestisorului Gill, care in mod surprinzator nu se numara printre rechini. Alte filme in care a jucat Willem Dafoe sunt Spider Man, Once Upon a Time New Mexico, The Reckoning, The Life Aquatic si The Clearing.
